How to Add a Quiz to Your Shopify Store (Step by Step)
Shopify has no built-in quiz feature, so a quiz is added with an app and placed through the theme editor. This is the whole process in order, from choosing the app to testing the live quiz.

The Short Answer
To add a quiz to a Shopify store, install a quiz app, build the quiz in the app, then place it in your theme through the theme editor. Shopify does not include a quiz feature of its own, and you do not need to edit theme code.
Most stores can have a first quiz live in an afternoon. The building takes minutes. Deciding what to ask and which products to recommend takes the rest of the time.
The steps below use AISalesQ. The order is the same in any Shopify quiz app.
Step 1: Decide What the Quiz Is For
A quiz does one job well. Choose it before you open any app. The usual jobs are helping a shopper pick a product, building a routine or bundle, finding a gift, or collecting an email address in exchange for a personal result.
Write the job as one sentence, such as "help a first-time buyer choose between our three coffee subscriptions". Every question you add later should serve that sentence.
If you are not sure which kind fits your store, the six types of ecommerce quiz compares them.
Step 2: Install a Quiz App
Open the Shopify App Store from your admin, search for a quiz app, and install it. The app asks for permission to read your products, because it needs them to build recommendations.
Check three things before you commit: whether the free plan lets you publish a real quiz, what the app does with the email addresses it collects, and whether you can see orders and revenue per quiz. Our comparison of Shopify quiz apps covers how the main ones differ.
AISalesQ has a free plan with one quiz, so you can build and publish before paying. The paid plans are on the pricing page.
Step 3: Build the Questions
Start from a template if one is close to your category. AISalesQ has quiz templates for fashion, beauty, jewelry, fitness, home and pet stores, and you replace the questions and products with your own.
Keep the quiz short. Ask only the questions whose answers change the recommendation. Three to six questions is enough for most stores.
Pick a question type that matches the answer. In AISalesQ you can use multiple choice, picture choice, dropdown, slider, a buttons scale, a rating scale and yes/no, plus text, name, email and phone fields. The quiz builder page shows each one.
Step 4: Connect Answers to Products
This is the step that makes a quiz a sales tool. You tell the quiz which products each answer leads to.
With answer mapping, you attach products or collections to each answer. With score-based results, each answer adds points to a category, and the category with the most points decides the result page. How a product recommendation quiz works explains both with an example.
Both are rules you set yourself, so walk through every path once and confirm each one ends on products you would recommend in person.
Step 5: Add an Email Step
Decide whether shoppers enter an email address before they see the result. A required email step collects more addresses and loses some shoppers. An optional one does the reverse.
Add a marketing consent checkbox and leave it unticked by default. In AISalesQ the subscriber, their answers and their consent choice are saved together, and the subscriber syncs to your Shopify customer list.
Step 6: Place the Quiz in Your Theme
Publish the quiz in the app, then open your theme editor in Shopify under Online Store, Themes, Customize. AISalesQ gives you three ways to place the quiz, and none of them needs code.
A popup. Turn on the app embed in the theme editor, choose the page types it appears on, and choose when it opens: immediately, after a delay, on scroll, or on exit intent on desktop.
An inline section. Add the quiz as an app block on any page, such as a dedicated "Find your match" page or the top of a collection.
A button. Add the button block where you want it, set its text and colours, and the quiz opens when a shopper clicks it. This suits product pages and banners.
App blocks need an Online Store 2.0 theme. Every free theme Shopify currently offers is one.
Step 7: Test Before You Announce It
Open your store in a private window on a phone and take the quiz the way a shopper would. Take it several times with different answers.
Check that every path ends on the right products, that Add to cart works from the result, that the email step accepts and rejects addresses correctly, and that the quiz is easy to close.
Then link to it from your navigation, your homepage and your next email campaign. A quiz nobody can find does not get taken.
After It Is Live
Watch two numbers in the first weeks: how many shoppers who start the quiz finish it, and how many who finish it buy. A sharp drop at one question usually means the question is confusing or feels intrusive.
Then use the answers. A shopper who told you their skin type or their budget should get a follow-up that reflects it. What to send after someone finishes your quiz lays out a five-email plan, and email automation shows how AISalesQ sends it.

Common questions
Questions about adding a quiz to Shopify.
What merchants ask before they put their first quiz on a store.
No. Shopify does not include a quiz builder. You add a quiz with an app from the Shopify App Store, or by embedding a quiz from an outside tool with custom code.
Yes. Quiz apps place the quiz through the theme editor as an app embed or an app block. In AISalesQ the popup, the inline section and the button are all added this way.
Several quiz apps have a free plan with limits. AISalesQ's free plan includes one quiz. Follow-up email automation starts on the paid plans.
Where undecided shoppers already are: the homepage, large collection pages and the main navigation. A quiz that only lives on its own page is rarely found.
Installing the app and placing the quiz takes minutes. Writing good questions and mapping your products takes longer, usually an hour or two for a first quiz.
A quiz app adds a script to the pages where the quiz appears. Limit the popup to the page types that need it, and test your page speed before and after you turn it on.
